As a busy clinical practitioner, I completely understand the feeling of overwhelm. There is rarely any time to think beyond immediate, moment-to-moment decision making.
Early in my career, my clinic days were entirely consumed by assessments and treatments. I was constantly fielding calls to owners and running team meetings. I also had the ever-present need for meticulous biosecurity in the hydrotherapy suite.
Organising time to look ahead was something I put off for years. I reasoned that I was simply too busy. The honest truth? I spent most days firefighting. I was desperately trying to achieve a work-life balance and rarely succeeding. Please do not wait until you “catch up with everything” to dedicate time for formalised thinking.
Sometimes, an unexpected event forces us to stop and evaluate our business. This could be a temporary closure or a quiet month. However, this is a reactive approach focused purely on survival.
This is vastly different from proactive thinking time. Proactive time is deeply productive. It is necessary for long-term success, essential for your own wellbeing, and vital to becoming a confident business manager.
The Challenge for Therapists
Many veterinary physiotherapists and clinical hydrotherapists face a common hurdle. They struggle to find the time to build their practice organically. When you are immersed in clinical work, trying to figure out marketing often falls to the very bottom of the to-do list. The irony is that you need a steady stream of clients who resonate with your practice ethos. This is the only way to sustain a high-quality canine healthcare service.
We are not selling commodities. Instead, we are providing a professional commitment that actively aligns our therapeutic practice with our ethical principles. Your practice ethos acts as a professional compass. It keeps the whole team focused on delivering an exceptional, caring service.
Adding to this pressure is the sheer confusion many of us feel when faced with the modern marketing world. As caring professionals, standard marketing tactics often feel alien or uncomfortable. It ‘s crucial to understand that you have choices. You can build a business model that is ethically sound and completely aligned with your clinical values. You do not have to adopt a high-pressure sales approach. You just need a strategy that reflects the genuine care you provide.
The Art of Thinking Proactively
The art of thinking is easily lost in our busy world. Simply surviving the constant barrage of information from digital channels is exhausting. This is especially true if you are a sensitive, caring therapist whose energy is already poured into your patients.
Yet, we know that therapists have developed exceptional reflective thinking skills for clinical problem-solving. I invite you to protect your energy from that noise. Gently apply those same reflective skills proactively to your clinic business management.
Since introducing formal, protected thinking time, my own productivity and successes have soared. The added bonus is that I now feel well-balanced and in charge of my time. I finally have a concrete plan on how to evolve for a future that specifically fits me.
