A caring canine therapist building trust with a dog during a clinical session.

As a busy clinical practitioner, I completely understand the feeling that there’s rarely any time to think beyond the immediate, moment-to-moment decision making. For example, my clinic days used to be consumed by assessments, treatments, calls to owners, team meetings, resource development, meticulous note-taking, and the ever-present need for disinfection and biosecurity in the centre and hydrotherapy suite.

Organising time to look ahead; to be proactive about CPD plans and business management, was something I put off for years. I reasoned that I was simply too busy. The honest truth? I spent most days firefighting, desperately trying to achieve a work-life balance and rarely succeeding.

My Clinical Insight: Don’t wait until you “catch up with everything” to dedicate time for formalised thinking.

Sometimes, an unexpected event, like a temporary closure, a shift in personal circumstances, or a slow month with reduced referrals, forces us to stop and evaluate our business. However, this is a reactive approach, focused on survival.

This is vastly different from “proactive thinking time.” Proactive time is productive, necessary for long-term success, essential for your own wellbeing, and subsequently, vital to becoming an efficient business manager.

The Challenge for Therapeutic  Professionals

Many veterinary physiotherapists, musculoskeletal practitioners and clinical hydrotherapists therapists face a common hurdle: finding the time to build their practice organically.

When you are immersed in clinical practice; trying to figure out marketing and how to generate new referrals often falls to the bottom of the to-do list. The irony is that to sustain a high-quality canine healthcare service, you need a steady stream of clients who resonate with your practice ethos.

We are not selling commodities; we are providing a professional commitment that actively aligns our therapeutic practice with our ethical and professional principles. Therefore, your practice ethos acts as a professional compass. Furthermore, it keeps the whole team targeted on delivering an exceptional, caring service to the dogs we see and the owners who choose us.

But how do you communicate that ethos to the wider world when you’re fully booked with clinical work? How do you step back and strategically plan your business growth instead of merely reacting to whatever comes through the door? How can you build and sustain an ethical and sustainable busiess over the long term?

Adding to this pressure is the sheer confusion many of us feel when faced with the modern “marketing” world. As caring professionals, standard marketing tactics often feel alien or uncomfortable. Furthermore, navigating the different types of business models available can be overwhelming. It is crucial to understand that you have choices. You can build a business model that is ethically sound, transparent, and completely aligned with your clinical values. You don’t have to adopt a high-pressure sales approach to be successful; you just need a strategy that reflects the genuine care you provide.

The Art of Thinking Proactively

The art of thinking is easily lost in our busy world. Every single day, we have an overwhelming amount of noise and information thrust at us through social media and digital channels. Compared to twenty years ago, simply surviving this constant barrage of information is exhausting; especially if you are a sensitive, caring therapist whose energy is already poured into your patients.

Yet, we know that therapists have developed exceptional reflective thinking skills for clinical problem-solving. I invite you to protect your energy from that noise, and gently apply those same reflective skills proactively to your clinic business management.

I used to say I was too busy to block out time. How mistaken I was! Since introducing formal, protected thinking time, my productivity and successes have soared. The added bonus? I now feel well-balanced, in charge of my time, and I have a concrete plan on how to evolve for a future that specifically fits me.

Whether it’s 30 minutes a week or an hour a month, this dedicated time allows you to evaluate progress, plan ahead, and recognise trends in the canine health industry.
